Ryan Coogler makes a major casting splash at Comic-Con, tapping the breakout actor to star as an adult Prince T’Challa II in the upcoming threequel.
LOS ANGELES – Wakanda is preparing for its next great chapter. Filmmaker Ryan Coogler took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to officially announce Black Panther 3, dropping a major casting bombshell that sent the Hall H crowd into a frenzy: rising British actor David Jonsson will star as the film’s character lead, stepping into the role of an adult Prince T’Challa II.
Jonsson, widely acclaimed for his breakout performances in Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, and the hit industry drama series, will take on the mantle of the young heir. The character was first introduced to audiences as a young child—the son of T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) and Nakia—in the emotional closing moments of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
A Coming-of-Age Legacy
Addressing the roaring crowd, Coogler reflected on the evolution of the franchise and the heavy legacy carried by the royal bloodline.
“The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T’Challa,” Coogler shared. “And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up [and] he comes of age.”
The third installment is shaping up to be a deeply personal coming-of-age story, following the young prince as he navigates the heavy burden of claiming his right to the throne while honoring his father’s monumental legacy.
When Jonsson took the stage to a standing ovation, he kept details close to the chest but expressed profound gratitude for joining the cinematic universe.
“Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin [Feige], thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson told the audience. “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”
